There are covers on offer to keep the foam that cushions the headset clean, most are expensive.
When I purchased my Oculus Rift the foam had a strange smell.
I took the face band off and washed it four or five times in warm water with washing up liquid.
The water and soap had no detrimental effect on the foam or its fixing.
It is quite robust, it also smells fine now : )
Do not be afraid of washing it.
